Biochar Production Calculation Tool
A dedicated assessment tool has been developed to estimate biochar production potential based on a range of parameters, including the type of biomass and the different stages of pretreatment, conversion, and post-processing. By integrating these technical and logistical factors, the tool helps to evaluate the feasibility and efficiency of biochar production across diverse territories. Its main objective is to identify local biochar potentials according to available resources and infrastructure, and to compare this pathway with existing biomass valorization options. Ultimately, it supports strategic decision-making for sustainable resource management and territorial carbon optimization.

Quantity (per year)
Select your Pyrolyzer
• Continuous: Automated industrial reactor (~85–90% carbon retention, maximum syngas & thermal energy recovery, e.g. Biomacon, Pyreg, Beston, Airex, ETIA).
• Intermediate Commercial: Large sealed retort kiln with emission control flaring (~80–85% carbon retention, e.g. Airburner, High Plains Biochar, Pyronet, Kiratechnologies).
• Low-tech Batch: Flame-cap or traditional farm kiln (~70–75% carbon retention, minimal heat capture, e.g. Kon-tiki, Ring of Fire, Exeter Retort).
Comparison with Actual Pathway
• Burnt: Uncontrolled open burning (rapid CO₂ emission, ~10–15% residual soil carbon).
• Compost: Aerobic composting with natural organic decay (~20–25% carbon retained).
• Direct Return: Surface mulching or natural decomposition (~25–30% carbon retained).

Surplus Energy Produced
Surplus Energy Produced = Energy global of syngas* - Endothermic Energy (consumed by the system)** - System Energy's lossess
* Energy global of syngas = Volume of gas produced * PCI
** Endothermic Energy should vary according the pyrolyzer system selected
