CASCADE at the ‘Technik zum Anfassen’ Event in Witzenhausen
On 29 September 2024, the CASCADE project will take part in the ‘Technik zum Anfassen’ event in Witzenhausen, North Hesse, Germany, from 11:00 to 17:00. Organized in collaboration with the University of Kassel and blinc, this hands-on event will provide an opportunity for visitors to explore biochar technology and the circular carbon economy.
Hands-On Experience with the Biochar Demonstrator
A central feature of the event will be the mobile biochar demonstrator, developed within the THREE C project (Creating and Sustaining Charcoal Value Chains). This compact unit will provide visitors with an overview of the biochar production process, illustrating how residual biomass is converted into carbon-negative products. Designed as an interactive exhibit, it offers a practical, hands-on approach to learning about circular carbon solutions.
Innovative Exhibits Showcasing Biochar Applications
In addition to the mobile demonstrator, CASCADE will showcase several biochar-based innovations across various sectors, including construction, water management, and agriculture.
- Ecofalt and Charcofalt: Ecofalt is a cold-produced, sustainable alternative to conventional asphalt, eliminating the need for gas during production and significantly reducing CO₂ emissions. When combined with biochar, it forms Charcofalt, a material that actively stores carbon, potentially contributing to CO₂ reduction in road construction.
- Biochar Natural Fertiliser – Cill Ulta An Leas Glas: This prototype fertiliser blends biochar with comfrey and nettle, offering a slow-release, organic soil enhancer that promotes soil health and biodiversity, making it an ideal sustainable alternative for local farming.
- Rainwater Filtration Well: Designed to address urban flooding, this prototype demonstrates how biochar filters can purify rainwater before it enters groundwater, helping to manage stormwater runoff in cities.
- 3D-Printed Biochar Concrete: A cutting-edge exhibit showcasing how biochar-reinforced concrete can enhance durability, insulation, and sustainability in construction. Visitors will be able to see the Burren Bench, inspired by Ireland’s Burren landscape, demonstrating how biochar-infused concrete can act as a carbon sink while supporting urban greening initiatives.

An Event for Learning, Engagement, and Inspiration
The CASCADE stand will also feature digital resources, including videos, factsheets, and research insights, providing visitors with in-depth knowledge on biochar applications and circular carbon economy strategies. Whether you are an individual interested in sustainable practices, a business seeking greener solutions, or a policymaker exploring climate-friendly innovations, this event will offer valuable insights and practical applications.
Join us on 29 September 2024, in Witzenhausen and discover how biochar and circular carbon solutions are paving the way for a more sustainable and carbon-negative future.
