CASCADE: Meet an Innovation Manager

Innovation within municipalities is often perceived as a slow-moving process, but in the Dutch city of Enschede, S. Lubberhuizen is proving otherwise. As a key innovator in the region, he not only develops ideas but also actively translates them into practical solutions.

One such initiative is ECOFALT, an asphalt alternative that is manufactured completely cold and primarily from recycled materials. With the integration of biochar, produced from biowaste, the material has the potential to become CO2 neutral.

As a partner in the CASCADE project, the municipality of Enschede is committed to expanding the circular carbon economy approach. A key step in this direction is the construction of new cycle paths using ECOFALT, demonstrating how innovative materials can contribute to more sustainable urban development.

This initiative aligns with the municipality’s broader goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 55% compared to 1990 levels. By incorporating circular solutions like biochar-enhanced asphalt, Enschede is setting an example for climate-conscious urban planning.
